North LAC: you said, we did

Based on what you said, North LAC set 3 key priorities:

  • improving local transport (through practical highways improvements and promoting better public transport)
  • improving community safety
  • improving community life

Since 2021, we have funded parks improvements in:

  • Wadsley Park Village
  • Grenoside
  • Deepcar

Alongside 'Friends of' groups and Parish and Town Councils, we have enabled £80,000 of improvements.

We’ve supported food banks and contributed to the funding of a new kitchen as part of the new Food Matters hub in Stocksbridge. We’ve also funded a new youth club in High Green and delivered a series of practical highways measures. This includes the instalment of a Vehicle Activated Sign per ward to highlight speeding.

In addition, we:

  • identified key fly tipping spots
  • funded local Police equipment
  • supported a wide range of community projects, including Jubilee, Coronation and Christmas events

We also supported the Stannington community during the gas flood crisis.

How we work

We know that the challenges we face will not be solved overnight, we try and make a difference by:

  • looking practically and creatively at local issues
  • building partnerships with services and group - this is whether it’s paid or volunteers to bring together everyone’s skills, knowledge and ideas
  • balancing things we can do quickly with areas that we need to take a long term view on working towards goals for the future

What’s happening around the North LAC

Road safety

We used our pedestrian improvement budget to fund a series of safety measures such as school safe parking barriers and road safety signs in Grenoside and Oughtibridge.

Community safety

We’ve developed new Community Action Groups bringing partners together to discuss hot spots, develop action plans and identify needs for community infrastructure.

Community life

We’ve created a guide to local support and key phone numbers.

We’ve supported groups providing cost of living support.

In 2023 to 2024 we supported 77 local projects such as:

Food Matters, Stocksbridge

The LAC has supported the project to create a new community hub, funding a new kitchen and key cost of living activities. This has transformed the Food Bank, putting it at the heart of a range of community activities.

Goals for the future

The North of the future we want to see is:

  • a connected place where people can access what they need to play an active part in their community
  • a safe place to live in and travel around
  • an attractive place with good facilities
