Environmental Stewardship Programme

Following the success of the Environmental Stewardship Pilot, we’re thrilled to announce that this project will be extended for another year. This rolling 12-week program will see 6 new young people, who are Not in Employment, Education or Training spending 2 days a week with an Amey Supervisor and clearing sites across the North East of Sheffield.

Their services include but are not limited to:

repairing fencing

repairing benches and other street furniture

cutting back hedges

painting out graffiti

litter picking areas

deep cleaning

Amey will also provide the necessary health and safety training, and the young people will spend an additional day developing their maths and English skills with the Lifelong Learning and Skills team.

As this project is now well-established, we’ve introduced signage for the work vans and A-Boards displaying the Environmental Stewardship logo to highlight the excellent work being done by these young people. Look out for these in your area.

The programme will continue to provide several young people with valuable skills, confidence in environmental maintenance, a formal qualification and a sense of pride and ownership in their local area.

Testimonials

"I am a participant in the Environmental Stewardship Programme. I have really enjoyed working outdoors and seeing a positive change in my local community from the work we have been doing. I've also learned a lot about grounds maintenance from my supervisor. I know my confidence in myself and what I can achieve has really improved working with Lifelong Skill and Amey. I am hoping to join Amey later in the year as an apprentice."

"My name is Shaun Cowan, and I'm the City Stewardship Grounds Maintenance Supervisor for Amey. I've been with the company for over 10 years now, and I love seeing the positive differences being made through this job. Some of the highlights are being able to pass on my skills and knowledge to the young trainees and seeing them progress and develop. The young trainees get to see the beginning, middle, and end results of the jobs we have undertaken, transforming neglected sites in the north of Sheffield. We've received positive feedback from local businesses, like Tracey’s Kitchen in Parsons Cross, where the manager said it's great to see these neglected sites being given a new lease of life."
