Untidy gardens

Our teams keep the public areas of Sheffield as clean and green as possible. If you come across any trees or branches that are making streets unsafe, we can clear them.

As gardens are often private property, we cannot clear them for residents. We can only advise residents on how to keep their own gardens clean and clear of rubbish.

What you can do

There are things you can do to keep your gardens clean and environmentally friendly. Your garden can also be an important home for wildlife if you take care of it:

  • avoid excess paving, and increase the number of plants, trees and shrubs you have
  • do not replace lawns and flowerbeds with paving and concrete as they increase flood risks and can make your street look unwelcoming
  • get involved with local gardening groups in your area, such as ‘Friends Of’ groups on Facebook (sheffield.gov.uk)
  • make sure your house, garden and the area 10 yards around your house is clear will significantly reduce your risk of pests

Untidy gardens containing rubbish can both spoil a street and have knock on affects by attracting rats and pests.

Getting support to look after your garden

Help your neighbours by lending them tools, or you can borrow tools for free at the Sheffield Community Toolbank.

Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife trust also have great advice on nature friendly gardening.
